Termites may be the most expensive pest you will ever encounter, if you do not deal with an infestation immediately. This can be difficult to accomplish because termites can remain hidden for some time before the massive amounts of damage they cause becomes externally visible.

How Do I Check for Termites?

Termites are often called the “silent destroyer” because they are notorious for hiding until it’s too late.
Learning to identify the signs of a termite infestation can protect your family and your investment.
Look for:
  • A swarm of winged insects in your home or in the soil around your home
  • Cracked or bubbling paint
  • Pencil-width mud tubes on exterior walls, wooden beams or in crawl spaces
  • The presence of frass- dry wood termites leave 6-sided wood colored pellets (droppings) where they have been eating.
  • Discarded wings from swarming insects (wings look like fish scales)

Be especially mindful of the following areas in your home:

  • Wooden structures in basements or crawl spaces.
  • All sills, sub floors, joists, support posts, supporting piers, basement window frames, wood under porches.
  • Anywhere concrete steps, porches, or slabs join the wooden structure.
  • Any scrap wood on the exterior, old tree stumps, fence posts and exterior frames of basement windows.
  • Signs of a sagging floor or ceiling

Preventing termite Infestations:

  • Regularly clean gutters and downspouts
  • Ensure that water is being diverted from your foundation
  • Watch for any kind of leak from pipes or appliances
  • Keep vents clear and install screens
  • Seal entry areas around water and utility lines
  • Keep wood, paper and lumber out of your crawl space and away from your foundation
  • Have tree stumps removed in close proximity to your home
  • Clear debris away from your home
  • Monitor wooden decks, fences and furniture outdoors
  • Do not allow wood on your home to touch the soil
According to the National Pest Management Association, termites cost Americans more than $5 billion in damages each year. If you suspect you may have a termite infestation – the most affordable option is the immediate one. Please do not hesitate to call an exterminator immediately to assess the situation.
